The NaNoWriMo tag.

I'm doing NaNoWriMo! Again! Hopefully it will go well and hopefully I will have updates for you full of positive news about how I'm flying past all my word count goals!

We can but dream.

Anyway, no updates for today but instead I have the NaNoWriMo tag, which I'm sure we've all seen before over the years so I'll just get straight on with it.

1. How many times have you done NaNoWriMo?
I've attempted the regular November NaNoWriMo three times and Camp NaNoWriMo four times. I won one of each last year but all my other attempts have been dismal failures.

2. How did you first find out about NaNoWriMo?
I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure I just saw people talking about it online. Possibly on YouTube.

3. What was the name of the first novel you attempted with NaNo?
Kitten and the Wolf, which is not the worst title I've ever come up with.

4. Give us a 1 sentence summary of what you’re writing this year.
The second draft of last year's project.

5. What’s the best writing advice you’ve ever been given?
'Don't write what you know, know what you write.' I can't remember where that came from but it really stuck.

6. Did you ever take a year off from NaNo? Why?
My first attempt was in my first year of university and I think I only actually lasted a day because I just didn't have the time, so I didn't try again until after I had completely finished uni.

7. What’s your biggest inspiration when figuring out what to write?
I actually have a lot of ideas stored up so when it comes to deciding what I want to work on for NaNoWriMo, I just pick whichever idea I'm most passionate about at the time and try to get on with it.

8. Give us the first sentence from one of your novels.
'The first fifteen years of my life were pretty normal.' That's from last year's NaNoWriMo project, which I'll be redrafting for this year's attempt, and that line probably won't be staying. Not least because I'm thinking about switching the whole thing to third person narration.

9. Why do you love writing?
I don't most of the time, but I do really love having written. Which I think is pretty common. At least I hope it is...

Britney Spears Book Tag.

Bee over at Vivatramp did this tag a few weeks ago and as soon as I saw the title I knew I had to do it myself. Britney Spears and books? That is everything I loved as a young teen. It's a pretty long tag so if you don't mind, I'm just going to get straight on with it!

Mickey Mouse Club
A book you read as a child that sparked your love of reading

Okay so my first book is actually an audiobook. I used to listen to this tape of Danny the Champion of the World over and over again as a child. I would put on side A to listen to as I fell asleep and if I woke up in the middle of the night I would flip it over to side B and do the same again. Really any of Roald Dahl's books could have worked for this one (or Jacqueline Wilson's for that matter) but Danny is always the one I think of first when I think about when I started to love stories.

Oops, I read it again!
A book that you love to re-read

As you can probably guess from the numerous creases on the cover, this copy of Avalon High is extremely well loved. I'm pretty sure I've read it more than any other book I own and I have a friend who has borrowed it more than once too.

Jamie Lynn
A book that looks really similar to another book

While these two aren't exactly the same there is a definite similarity to the design of Campari for Breakfast and Where'd You Go, Bernadette.

Crossroads
A severely underrated book

I don't really understand why Born Confused isn't seen as a classic YA novel. It's beautifully written and I can only assume that maybe the way it explores issues like cultural appropriation was a little ahead of its time when it came out in 2002. I would love for it to reach a wider audience now though because it really blew me away when I finally read it a couple of years ago.

Justin Timberlake
A book you can't get over

I finally read Purple Hibiscus as part of Read Women Month in June and I have not been able to stop thinking about it since. The story, the setting, the way it was written, I just loved it all. I need to get the rest of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's books immediately.

Madonna
A book with an older character you secretly want to make out with

Okay so I might be cheating a little bit with this one but thanks to Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Ron Weasley is now officially older than me and totally counts.

The Onyx Hotel
A book you quit half way through

Twice I tried to read The Library of Shadows and twice I failed. I did better the second time but something about this book and me just doesn't work.

Federline
The book you most regret bringing into your life

I hate The Time Traveler's Wife and I don't want to talk about it.

Barefoot in the Bathroom
A dirty book

At first I thought I didn't actually have a book for this one but then I remembered The Vincent Boys. I won The Vincent Boys along with a pile of other books from Hot Key in a twitter competition a while ago. I did read it but, although I can see why a lot of people like it, it's definitely not for me.

The Cheeto
A book with an orange cover

Every Day has probably the most orange cover I have ever seen on a book.

2007
A book that was tough to get through

I started reading Le Morte d'Arthur before I went to university, took a three year break in the middle, and then finally dedicated myself to finishing it after I finished uni. It was written in the 15th century so it's just a little dense. Malory feels the need to list every single knight who is present at every single battle. And there are a lot of battles.

'Gimme More'
A book that should have had a sequel/series

I actually feel like I've heard somewhere that Sofia Khan is Not Obliged is getting a sequel but I'm really excited by that prospect and I can't think of any other book that I think should have a sequel more.

Starbucks
A book that kept you up all night

Now that I'm a little older I can better see the flaws with these books but as a teenager in the height of my Twilight obsession, I spent many a school night sitting up in bed until 2am with the House of Night series.

'3'
A book featuring a love triangle

I know To All the Boys I've Loved Before technically had a love triangle but in my opinion that love triangle was nothing compared to the one in P.S. I Still Love You. I think this is the only book I've ever read where I was on the side of both guys at the same time.

'Cool'
A book you thought was really cool

Lorali is really unique and definitely super cool.

'Work Bitch'
An inspirational book

I've read quite a few books on writing but Becoming a Writer is hands down the most useful and inspirational of them all. I really recommend it to anyone who considers themselves a writer.

The Get To Know Me Tag.

Beth recently tagged me to do The Get To Know Me Tag and this is so throw-back MySpace style that I am psyched to oblige!

Vital Stats
Name: Anastasia.
Nicknames: Stasia.
Birthday: 4th November.
Star sign: Scorpio.
Occupation: Trying to be a writer. Dad prefers to use the term 'bum'.

Appearance
Hair colour: Brown, currently with a sort of ginger ombre.
Hair length: So long. Past my hips.
Eye colour: Green.
Best feature: My nose. It's huge and I hated it when I was a teenager but now I think it makes my whole face.
Braces: Nope.
Piercings: Just one in each ear.
Tattoos: Nope.
Right or left: Right.

Firsts
Best friend: Jess, who you'll have heard plenty about if you've been reading this blog for long! You can see her face in this post and she has a youtube channel (why not throw in a plug?) We've known each other since we were 2.
Award: There might have been other awards before it but we still talk about when I won third place in the egg and spoon race at school. (It was actually a potato and spoon race though because our school didn't trust us with eggs, which is fair enough.) It's the greatest and only sporting achievement I ever managed.
Sport: Swimming. Swimming and badminton are the only sports I have ever been interested in.
Real holiday: Australia when I was ten. We went spent a month in Sydney and Brisbane. It was one heck of a first flight.
Concert: I don't think it's actually the first one I went to but the first one I remember was a sort of day festival thing outdoors.

Favourite
Film: I'm going to say Strictly Ballroom but this is impossible.
TV show: Gavin & Stacey and Please Like Me are probably the top two but I love The OC and Glee and Merlin and so many others! I really like TV...
Colour: Green.
Song: I just do not have an answer to this. Probably something by David Bowie. Or Dolly Parton.
Restaurant: Restaurant? You overestimate how fancy I am, quiz. There is a pub in Plymouth called 'The Bank'. It's right by the theatre and they do a lot of tasty vegetarian stuff so we go there a lot.
Shop: Waterstones or Lush.
Books: I Capture the Castle, the Harry Potter books, Avalon High.
Shoes: I wear Toms classic shoes to death. Literally. I'm on my fourth pair. They're the most comfortable shoes ever but I have weird feet so I have to buy mens sizes in them and I always wear a hole in them in the exact same place so then I just... buy a new pair... They're so comfortable!

Currently
Feeling: Cold. It was spring yesterday. What happened?
Single or taken: Hahahahahaha. Single.
Eating: Nothing.
Thinking about: All those mini eggs in my room...
Watching: The second episode of Shadowhunters. It's not great.
Wearing: Pyjamas. This is probably why dad thinks I'm a bum.

Future
Want children: Not any time soon.
Want to be married: If I ever find someone I want to marry.
Careers in mind: Writer, photographer, duchess in an early twentieth century novel.
Where you want to live: I'd love to live in Paris for a few years but ultimately I'm pretty happy with Cornwall.

Do you believe in...
God: This is way too complex a question for one of these things.
Miracles: I don't know.
Love at first sight: You know that Hozier song 'Someone New'?
Ghosts: I don't know.
Aliens: Not necessarily Star Trek style aliens, but definitely life on other planets.
Soul mates: Kind of? Not just in the romantic way though.
Heaven: These questions are too heavy for eleven on a Friday morning.
Hell: Seriously, I don't know.
Kissing on the first date: If everyone's into it, there's no harm.
Yourself: Sure.

I hope that's told you everything you could ever possibly want to know about me! Now if you don't mind, I have some mini eggs to devour...

The Christmas Tag.

I've been tagged by my lovely friend Courtney over at Cupcakes & Cateyes to do The Christmas Tag and as Christmas is absolutely my favourite time of year I am totally up to answering some questions about it. Let's do it!

1. Do you stay in your PJ's or dress up for Christmas?
PJ's all the way. If you think I'm putting a bra on on Christmas day then you are very much mistaken, my friend.

2. Do you open your presents Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?
Christmas morning.

3. What's your favourite Christmas meal or treat?
Gingerbread lattes. They count, right?

 4. What's your favourite holiday movie (or specials)?
I love Christmas movies (the cheesier the better) but I might have to go for the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special. I'll watch it any time of year and never get sick of it. In fact I think I've already seen it about three times in 2014.

5. Have you ever made a snowman?
A couple of very little ones. We don't get much snow around here and when we do it's usually in January or February, never at Christmas.

6. Show us an embarrassing Christmas card photo!
Is this a thing people actually do? I've never known anyone actually do one of these things. I'm pretty sure this is something that only exists in American TV shows and films.

7. What holiday tradition are you looking forward to most this year?
We don't really have any traditions that I can think of? Does watching the Doctor Who Christmas special while we eat dinner count?

8. Is your Christmas tree real or fake?
Fake. We've never had a real one. I don't totally see the point in them to be honest when you could just get a nice fake tree and reuse it year after year.

9. Be honest: do you like giving or receiving gifts better?
Both! Obviously I love receiving gifts but I also really like choosing the perfect presents and wrapping them up nicely. IDK I just love Christmas.

10. What would be your dream place to visit for the holiday season?
Probably Germany. From what I've seen and been told it sounds like Christmas is amazing over there.

11. Does your family have a special holiday recipe you like to help make?
Not really. I'm making a yule log this year and I've done that before but mum and dad usually take care of all the Christmas and Boxing Day cooking and we don't really have any special Christmas recipes or anything.

12. Most memorable holiday moment?
I honestly can't think of one. My Christmases are super fun, I promise! I'm just completely blanking.

13. What made you realise the truth about Santa?
I don't really know. There wasn't like an event or anything. I think I just figured it out gradually.

14. Favourite Christmas songs?
Let's just say White Christmas, Fairytale of New York, Merry Xmas Everybody, 'Zat You Santa Claus, and Stop the Cavalry. And we'll leave it there or else we'll be here all day. I'm very passionate about Christmas music.

15. Do you make New Year's resolutions? Do you stick to them?
I don't really make New Year's resolutions precisely because I know I won't stick to them.

16. What makes the holidays special for you?
I don't know! There's lovely food and Christmas music and decorations everywhere and Christmas markets and everyone's running around trying to find the perfect presents for their friends and family and it's just nice? I don't know, the whole thing is just still magical to me.

I'm not going to tag anyone specifically but if you want to answer these questions then go for it and let me know so that I can see your answers!

stasialikesbooks | Would you rather: book edition.

I already typed up this entire post once and then accidentally deleted it and I am Not Happy about it, but anyway... I recently saw this tag on The Book Journal and thought it seemed like a fun bunch of questions. So let's get started! (Again!)

Would you rather read only trilogies or only stand alone novels?
Definitely stand alone novels. One really good book is always better than a trilogy where the story's been all stretched out to fit the extra books in.

Would you rather read only male or female authors?
Female authors. There's still one Raven Boys book to be released and I am not missing out on that!

Would you rather shop at Barnes & Noble Waterstones or Amazon?
I would rather shop at Waterstones but when you buy as many books as I do sometimes you have to go for the cheaper option, you know? I do prefer a proper bookshop though. Especially because there isn't one where I live.

Would you rather books became films or TV shows?
I love TV but thinking about it, if a book is made into a film then yes some things will have to be left out but if it's made into a TV show then eventually whoever is making it is going to run out of source material and have to add things and make up extra story lines and I think for a book I really love I'd prefer having things cut out for a film than have that happen. So I'll say film. Unless we're talking about a one off mini-series... This is a very complicated decision.

Would you rather read 5 pages a day or 5 books a week?
Definitely 5 books a week!

Would you rather be a professional reviewer or an author?
Author.

Would you rather read your favourite 20 books over and over or only read books you've never read before?
I'll say books I've never read before because I may miss my old faves but maybe I would find some new ones??

Would you rather be a librarian or a bookseller?
A bookseller. Think of me as the female Bernard Black.

Would you rather only read your favourite genre or every genre except your favourite?
Only my favourite genre because my favourite genre is probably contemporary YA and there is a pretty good variety in that genre, I think. I could probably deal with that.

Would you rather read only physical books or ebooks?
My heart says physical books but my rapidly overflowing bookcases say ebooks. (It's physical books though. It's always physical books.)

stasialikesbooks | The A-Z bookish survey.

The same day that I decided to make this new blog I saw this tag on The Book Journal and thought it seemed like a fun first post to kick things off with. So without further ado (partly because this is kind of long. Mostly because I'm currently re-watching Gossip Girl and right now I'm on the first Christmas episode!) here are my A-Z Bookish Survey answers!

Author you've read the most books from
Meg Cabot.

Best sequel ever
Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins or every single Harry Potter sequel.

Currently reading
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart.

Drink of choice whilst reading
A nice cup of tea.

E-reader or physical books
I do read a few books on my iPad and find it super useful but I think it will always be physical books for me.

Fictional character you probably would have actually dated in high school
Can I pretend that I was cool enough in high school to land Cricket Bell??

Glad you gave this book a chance
Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier. My mum bought it for me and it sat in my bookcase for ten years or something before I finally got around to reading it. I wish I'd given it a chance sooner!

Hidden gem of a book
I'm going to say Campari for Breakfast by Sara Crowe. It only came out earlier this year but I absolutely love it and I don't know anyone else who's read it yet.

Important moment in your reading life
Probably the first time I finished reading a novel by myself. It was Charm School by Anne Fine and I can still remember how excited I was when I reached the final page because I could finally say that I had read a whole book by myself!

Just finished
Don't Tell Alfred by Nancy Mitford.

Kinds of books you won't read
Probably horror? Maybe?

Longest book you've ever read
I expected this to be Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur but I just checked and it's actually Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, clocking in at an impressive 766 pages.

Major book hangover because of...
Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins.

Number of bookcases you own
Two bookcases + a drawer full of books + half a shelf on my parents' bookcase.

One book you've read multiple times
Avalon High by Meg Cabot.

Preferred place to read
In bed or in the bath. Just, lying down somewhere, I guess.

Quote that you like from a book you've read
'God knows I tried my best to learn the ways of this world, even had inklings we could be glorious; but after all that's happened, the inkles ain't easy anymore' from Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre.

Reading regret
That I actually read the entire of The Time Traveler's Wife.

Series you've started and need to finish
The Percy Jackson series! I've only read the first one but I really want to read the rest of the series.

Three of your all-time favourite books
I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, Avalon High by Meg Cabot, and Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell.

Unapologetic fangirl for
Harry Potter and The Princess Diaries.

Very excited for this release more than others
Blue Lily, Lily Blue, the third book in Maggie Stiefvater's Raven Boys series.

Worst bookish habits
I can't really think of any. Unless you count buying books faster than I can read them. If you do then that.

X marks the spot - start at the top of your shelf and pick the 27th book
A Series of Unfortunate Events #12: The Penultimate Peril by Lemony Snicket.

Your latest book purchase
The Cornish Coast Murder by John Bude and The Norfolk Mystery by Ian Sansom.

Zzzz-snatcher book - last book that kept you up WAY too late
Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins. I barely stopped to sleep or eat while I was reading that book.

Seven deadly sins tag.

The lovely Saruuh tagged me in the seven deadly sins tag earlier this week so let's answer some questions!

1. Greed - What is your most inexpensive book?

Well I've actually won quite a few books recently through Twitter giveaways so I suppose one of those, since they were all free!

2. Wrath - What author do you have a love/hate relationship with?

I honestly can't think of anyone. I think I pretty much either like an author or I don't tbh.

3. Gluttony - What book have you devoured over and over with no shame?

Avalon High by Meg Cabot. I've genuinely lost track of how many times I've read it.

4. Sloth - What book have you neglected reading due to laziness?

I'm gonna say Catch-22 by Joseph Heller. I borrowed it from my dad years ago and I've started it at least three times but I always give up after a few chapters and I don't even really know why.

5. Pride - What book do you most talk about in order to sound like an intellectual reader?

I don't think I necessarily do that but I do keep my copy of Joyce's Ulysses on my bookshelf even though I only read a few pages for uni and do not intend on ever reading it all the way through. So that's pretty much the same thing.

6. Lust - What attributes do you find attractive in male or female characters?

Just whatever it is that Stephanie Perkins is serving up in her male love interests. Which is possibly not entirely appropriate given that I'm 22 and her characters are all teenagers but whatever, call me when Cricket Bell is 21.

7. Envy - What book would you most like to receive as a gift?

Probably Doctor Who: The Vault or a book of Vivian Maier's photography. Just one of those big coffee table books that I'd really like but they're too expensive to justify buying for myself, you know?

I'm not going to tag anyone specifically but if you want to answer these questions then consider yourself tagged! And let me know in the comments if you answer these on your own blog. I'd love to hear your answers.

Very Inspiring Blogger Tag.

I'm not sure I've ever been called 'inspiring' before but I am very flattered and delighted to have been nominated as a Very Inspiring Blogger by Aimee at Aimee Belle Blog! This is a really lovely tag that is just designed to share the love around the blogosphere, which in my opinion is always a good thing!

The Rules
  1. Link the person who nominated you
  2. List the rules and display the award
  3. Share 7 facts about you
  4. Nominate 15 bloggers who inspire you
  5. Let them know you have nominated them
My 7 facts
  1. I can kind of play the ukulele.
  2. I collect cameras but that sort of started by accident.
  3. I own two guitars but I really can't play the guitar. It's a long story.
  4. Baking is the best thing to calm me down when I'm stressed. Which is odd given that I'm kind of the Gordon Ramsey of baking (because I swear a lot and throw things, not because I'm the host of multiple TV shows.) On second thoughts, maybe that's WHY it calms me down...
  5. I procrastinate everything, even the things I want to do. For example, I was supposed to be spending this month attempting to write the first draft of a novel. Yesterday I wrote eight pages of the the first draft of a screenplay instead.
  6. I've been trying to learn to speak French on and off since I was about six years old and I can still only just barely get by in French shops and restaurants. It really is shockingly bad. Although how to order wine and beer was the first thing I learnt when I first started trying, so obviously my priorities have always been in order.
  7. I still sleep with my teddy bear in my bed. His name is Ted Bear because I was a very original child and he usually sits at the end of my bed (unless it's cold, in which case he obviously has to snuggle up to me for warmth!)
Who I'm nominating
  1. Saruuh at Syntax Reviews
  2. Jen at maizeandbooks
  3. Courtney at Cupcakes & Cateyes
  4. Jillian at Jillian Lorraine
  5. Rhianne at For The Easily Distracted
  6. Jules at Everywhere, Please
  7. Helena at Helena La Petite
  8. Valeria at Gilded Butterflies
  9. Bex at She & Wild
  10. Molly at My Name Is Yeh
  11. Jenny at Sunny Sweet Pea
  12. Sarah at Daydreams of Summertime
  13. Rosie at Cider With Rosie
  14. Lyzi at Being Little
  15. Bee at Vivatramp
(I know a lot of people coil away from tag posts in horror so don't worry, I won't be offended if you don't do it!)

The Book Blogger Tag.

I have no sense of time so I've forgotten when exactly Saruuh at Syntax Reviews tagged me in the Book Blogger Tag but I'm answering the questions now and that's the important thing, right? (I think it was only a week ago. Maybe two.)

What are your top three book pet hates?

1. Writing that tries too hard to be profound and ends up missing it.
2. Dialogue that just doesn't sound natural.
3. Writing that really obviously tries to tell the reader how they should feel about what's happening.

Describe your perfect reading spot.

Right here. This exact spot in Paris.

Well, you did say 'perfect'.

Tell us three book confessions.

1. I am almost incapable of reading most books that were written before the 1900s. I often just can't get past the old fashioned writing and my eyes sort of glaze over and I'll read pages and pages without anything actually going in.
2. Because of number 1 I finished Jane Eyre (hated it) and then a friend asked me about the part with the fire. I had literally no idea there had even been a fire in the book. I thought that character was just blind in the end because he was old. (In my defence I was 13 at the time and did read it while on holiday in Australia. So there were other things happening.)
3. I once lent a book to a friend and she returned it to me in perfect condition and told me how careful she had been with it because she knew how much I loved my books. About five minutes later I accidentally dropped the book into a swimming pool. It's all wrinkly and crispy now but still readable!

When was the last time you cried during a book?

When I was reading the last few pages of Landline by Rainbow Rowell yesterday.

How many books are on your bedside table?

I don't actually have a bedside table but my desk chair is next to my bed so I tend to just throw things on there before I go to bed and right now there is only one book.

What is your favourite snack whilst you're reading?

I don't usually tend to eat while I'm reading (I do most of my reading in bed before I go to sleep or in the bath) but I guess it would probably be some kind of sweets.

Name three books you would recommend to everyone.

1. Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
2. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
3. Maus by Art Spiegelman

Show us a picture of your favourite bookshelf on your bookcase.

(Sorry for the terrible picture quality. My bookcase is right in the corner of my room, as far away from the window as possible.)

Write how much books mean to you in just three words.

That's too difficult!

What is your biggest reading secret?

I don't know. What constitutes a 'reading secret'? My main bookshelf is really deep so all the shelves are stacked twice back but that's not much of a secret, you can kind of tell that in the photo up there. But I guess you can't see what books are in the back. ~Secret books~.

Read Women Month Tag

For today's Read Women Month post I thought it would be fun to make a quick tag post. Turns out questions for tags are a lot more difficult to think of than I expected, so the more interesting of these questions were actually suggested by Saruuh, who is a true godsend.

So, without further ado, the Read Women Month Tag.

Your favourite book written by a woman

I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith

The last book you read that was written by a woman

Heist Society by Ally Carter

Your favourite non-fiction book written by a woman

How To Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran

Your favourite series written by a woman

The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling (Obvious and predictable but true)

Three favourite female authors

Meg Cabot, Rainbow Rowell, JK Rowling

A book you love, written by a female author, that you don't think enough people have heard of

Born Confused by Tanuja Desai Hidier

One woman writer you've been meaning to read but haven't yet

Tahereh Mafi (I will get around to reading Shatter Me one day, I swear!)

Your favourite female-written book that people often look down on

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer (I have a sneaky feeling most people might say this one)

Your favourite female character in a book written by a woman

Mia Thermopolis from Meg Cabot's Princess Diaries series

Your favourite female friendship in a book written by a woman

Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley from the Harry Potter series

A male-written book you wish had been written by a woman

Fiesta: The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway (Really I would just love to see any of Hemingway's plots written by a woman and with a female protagonist.)

And that's it. Short and sweet!

I'm going to tag Saruuh, Jen, and anyone else who wants to do it. You don't even have to be taking part in Read Women Month, I just want to share the women writers love!

If you do decide to do this tag then please let me know, I'd love to read your answers!

Do I use too many exclamation points? I think I might.
